Figures collected from public/regulatory sources, September 2026. UPI/IMPS limits are largely NPCI/RBI-mandated ceilings; banks can and do set lower per-channel limits of their own — check your bank's app for your account's actual limit.
Payment rail limits
| Rail | Per-transaction limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | ₹1,00,000/day (standard) | Higher limits (up to several lakh) apply for specific categories like capital markets, IPO subscriptions, and insurance — set by NPCI, not uniform. Most banks cap at ~20 UPI transactions/day. |
| IMPS | Up to ₹5,00,000 | Instant, available 24×7; typical charge ₹2.50-₹15 depending on amount slab. |
| NEFT | No RBI-mandated upper limit | Free and available 24×7 (batch-settled); banks may still apply their own per-transaction or per-day cap for online/mobile banking. |
| RTGS | Minimum ₹2,00,000, no upper limit | Real-time settlement, available 24×7, typically free. |
ATM daily cash withdrawal (classic/regular debit card)
| Bank | Daily limit |
|---|---|
| SBI | ₹20,000 |
| HDFC Bank | ₹25,000 |
| ICICI Bank | ₹25,000 |
| Axis Bank | ₹25,000 |
Premium/platinum card variants usually carry higher ATM and POS limits than the classic/regular cards shown here — check your specific card variant in your bank's app.
Choosing a rail
For everyday transfers under ₹1 lakh, UPI is instant and free. For ₹1 lakh-₹5 lakh, IMPS settles instantly for a small fee. Above ₹2 lakh, RTGS settles in real time; NEFT works at any amount but settles in batches every few minutes. See our IFSC & Customer Care page for the codes you'll need to set any of these up.
