If a bank, broker, or insurer hasn't resolved your complaint, India's financial regulators each run a free, independent grievance-redressal mechanism. Here's where to go for each.
Banking — RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme
Covers complaints against banks, NBFCs, and payment system participants — deficient service, unfair charges, ATM/card disputes, and more.
- First complain directly to your bank and wait 30 days for a response.
- If unresolved (or you're unsatisfied), file online at cms.rbi.org.in — the RBI's Complaint Management System.
- You'll receive a complaint number to track status; email and physical filing (via the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre) are also available if you can't file online.
Securities & brokers — SEBI SCORES
Covers complaints against brokers, mutual funds, listed companies, and other SEBI-registered intermediaries.
- Raise the issue with your broker/intermediary first.
- If unresolved, file at scores.sebi.gov.in (SEBI Complaints Redress System).
- Complaints not resolved through SCORES can proceed to SEBI's Online Dispute Resolution mechanism.
Insurance — IRDAI Bima Bharosa
Covers complaints against insurance companies — claim rejection, delay, or mis-selling.
- Complain to your insurer's grievance cell first.
- If unresolved, file at bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in.
- Unresolved insurance disputes can also be escalated to the Insurance Ombudsman for your region.
General tips
- Always complain to the institution first and keep a written record (email, complaint number, dates) — most ombudsman schemes require this before they'll take up a case.
- These services are free — never pay anyone claiming to "expedite" an ombudsman complaint.
- Note your complaint reference number; you'll need it to track status on each portal.
