Quick reference for looking up a bank branch's IFSC code and reaching customer care — the two things you need most often for a bank transfer or a complaint.
What is an IFSC code?
The Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) is an 11-character alphanumeric code that identifies a specific bank branch for electronic transfers (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS). It's structured as: first 4 characters = bank code, 5th character is always 0, last 6 characters = branch code. Example: SBIN0001234 identifies a specific SBI branch.
Where to find your branch's IFSC
- Printed on your cheque book, above or near your account number.
- On your bank's official website — every bank publishes an IFSC/branch locator tool.
- Via the RBI-maintained master list, mirrored by most net-banking and payment apps' branch lookup features.
Customer care — how to reach your bank
Every bank publishes a toll-free customer care number and an official complaint/grievance page on its own website — search "[your bank name] customer care" or check the back of your debit card / passbook, since these numbers change periodically and are safest sourced directly from the bank rather than a third-party list.
If your bank doesn't resolve a complaint to your satisfaction within 30 days, you can escalate to the RBI Banking Ombudsman — see that page for the process.
